If you don't mind could you perhaps describe a bit about what you do when moving from step 7 to 8? You've applied hard edged shadows but in step 8 they're smoothly gradiated and I'm curious as to what tool / technique you've applied for this, especially if it's more of an automated "soften edge" procedure vs. a manual application of successively less contrasty tones.
